Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One's Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.
Residents of Austin are known as&nbsp;Austinites.&nbsp;They include a diverse mix of government employees, college students, musicians, high-tech workers, digital marketers, and&nbsp;blue-collar workers. The city's official slogan promotes Austin as "The Live Music Capital of the World", a reference to the city's many musicians and live music venues, as well as the long-running&nbsp;PBS&nbsp;TV concert series&nbsp;Austin City Limits.&nbsp;The city also adopted "Silicon Hills" as a nickname in the 1990s due to a rapid influx of technology and development companies. In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird",&nbsp;which refers to the desire to protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations.&nbsp;Since the late 19th century, Austin has also been known as the "City of the Violet Crown", because of the colorful glow of light across the hills just after sunset.
In 1987, Austin originated and remains the site for&nbsp;South by Southwest&nbsp;(stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as&nbsp;South By), an annual conglomeration of parallel&nbsp;film,&nbsp;interactive media, and&nbsp;music festivals&nbsp;and&nbsp;conferences that take place in mid-March. Emerging from a strong economic focus on government and education, since the 1990s, Austin has become a center for technology and business. A number of&nbsp;Fortune 500&nbsp;companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including&nbsp;3M,&nbsp;Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Georgetown is a city in central Texas. Buildings in its Downtown Historic District include the Victorian-era Old Williamson County Jail and the 1911 Courthouse. The Williamson Museum explores local history. East, Southwestern University is known for its Fountainwood Observatory. Blue Hole Park features a lagoon along the San Gabriel River. To the south, Inner Space Cavern is a vast cave with hundreds of stalactites.

Hyde Park is a charming residential enclave with tree-lined streets and homes from the turn of the 20th century. Examples of Victorian architecture, including Queen Annes and Tudor Revivals, mix with Craftsman bungalows. The Elizabet Ney Museum, a castlelike residence and studio built in 1893 by a free-spirited sculptor &amp; artist, showcases over 100 of her pieces. Coffeehouses and cafes round out the scene.

According to Lakeway's GIS Analyst, the city has a total area of 13.37&nbsp;square miles (21.51&nbsp;km), of which, 13.07&nbsp;square miles (15.0&nbsp;km2) of it is land and 0.3&nbsp;square miles (0.7&nbsp;km2) of it (4.45%) is water.

The town of Lakeway was founded on the site of a 2,700-acre ranch owned by Houston oilman and rancher Jack (Jake) Josey. In early 1962 three Houston business men associated with the Gulfmont Hotel Company&mdash;G. Flint Sawtelle, John H. Crooker, Jr., and Lee Blocker&mdash;obtained a sixty-day option to purchase the land and plan a hotel and resort community. The name Lakeway was a natural sequel to Gulfmont's Fairway Motor Hotel in McAllen, Texas, so named because it overlooked the fairway of a golf course. Construction of the hotel began in October 1962 and the grand opening was July 12, 1963. Around the same time the Lakeway Land Company was formed with Flint Sawtelle as president, for the development of real estate. In July 1974 a substantial majority of resident and nonresident property owners voted to incorporate with the consent of the city of Austin, and the 1,200-acre village of Lakeway resulted.

Leander is a city in Williamson and Travis counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census, and 49,234 at the 2017 census estimate. A suburb just north of Austin, and part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area, it is the fourth-fastest-growing city in the state of Texas.

North Austin

Northwest Hills, sometimes referred to as Far West after its main street, is a suburb in the northwestern part of Austin, Texas, United States. The neighborhood is home to the largest concentration of Jewish residents in Austin, and includes a 40-acre complex housing a number of Jewish community organizations, synagogues, and schools. David Barrow Sr. and Edward Barrow, along with their associate Chuck Stahl and David Barrow Jr., were responsible for much of Austin's expansion in the flatlands and in the mountain regions during most of the 1950s and 1960s. David Sr. was also primarily responsible for the eventual construction of Texas State Highway Loop 1 ("Mopac"), the highway that stretches on the east side of the neighborhood. He helped construct Mopac to help the flow of traffic for residents who lived in the northwestern quadrant of the city. Before Mopac was formed in 1966, most Northwest Hills residents had to commute to Lamar Boulevard, or sometimes as far as Interstate 35, to reach downtown, where most of them worked. He ran studies that showed that Austin needed better streets for northwestern residents. The first properties the Barrows bought in Northwest Hills were on Balcones Drive. They then moved to the lands at Mount Bonnell, the ones that overlook the Colorado River, and began to develop properties there. Gradually, they developed lands further into the hills, expanding present-day Northwest Hills. Initially, the Barrows had no intention of expanding into Northwest Hills. They believed, however, that the affluent growth of the city was apt for northwestern Austin, and that if Austin were to ever build an area for that segment of the population, the design would take place in hilly terrains like Northwest Hills. The Barrows thus gradually began buying properties in the area by picking few parcels of land in sparse locations, developing them, and then moving to more rugged lands. Most of the lands in Northwest Hills were owned by M.E. Hart, a Canadian businessman, and a man known as Capitan Knox. The Barrows struck a deal with Hart and agreed to buy the lands from him at a rolling option, meaning that they would buy them in parts and purchase them at market price. Both of them benefited from the agreement since the Barrows did not have the capital to purchase upfront, while Hart sold the properties at an increasing market price since the values of the lands grew due to the neighborhood developments. The Barrows and their associates came to own 2,500 acres (1,000 ha) of the 3,500 acres (1,400 ha) of developed land in northwest Austin by the 1950s. The development of the lands by the Barrows were considered unique for its time. When they put together a design for the neighborhood, they wanted to create a "new" town while drawing from other developed lands of Austin's core urban area. Balcones Drive, which borders the eastern part of Northwest Hills, was intended to serve as a counterpart to downtown's Colorado River. Far West Boulevard, which traverses Northwest Hills from east to west, was conceived to be comparable to Congress Avenue, the main street in downtown Austin. The developments by the Barrows were also considered unique because of the plan to include a Missouri Pacific Railroad system next to the neighborhood, as well as plans to have Far West Boulevard empty into Airport Boulevard, a main thoroughfare in the southeastern part of Austin
